The Catacombs
By 1780 the cemetaries of Paris had become so overcrowded that the government began systematically
exhuming bodies and moving them to the quarries that lie some 20 meters beneath the city.
The practice continued until 1871. The bones from over one million skeletons are carefully stacked
along the walls of the tunnels.
